Britain is taking jobseekers off the benefits bill at the fastest rate in Europe, new figures show, with 11,000 people returning to work each week.

The rise of employment in Britain has been almost twice as fast as any other country in Europe, with 368,000 people coming off benefits in the last year.

The Work and Pensions Secretary Iain Duncan Smith said the UK’s job creation was the “envy of Europe” with “countless individuals” turning their lives around.

Across Europe, Germany had the second fastest rise in employment – and that was at almost half the rate of UK.

The new figures from Eurostat show that a record 30.8 million people are now in work, meaning that the employment rate has returned to pre-recession levels.
